To Make Avakai Annam





2 cups  – Basmati rice

4 tbsps  – Mango avakaya (pickle)

1 cup – Potato pieces medium size

1 cup  – Sliced onions

6 – 7  – Green chillies sliced

1/2 cup  – Tomato pieces

3 tbsps  – Onion and garlic paste

20 – 30 Mint leaves (pudina)

3 nos  – Bay leaves

1/2 tsp – Shahi jeera

3 nos  – Cardamoms

3 nos  – Cloves

1 inch  – Dalchini stick

1 nos  – Black cardamoms

1 nos – Star anise

2 tsp – Biryani masala powder

3 tbsps – Ghee

3 tbsps   – Oil

Salt to taste


  1. Soak rice in water for an hour.
  2. Take a clay pot or non stick pan on the flame, add ghee and oil and heat. Now fry potato pieces and then fry shahi jeera, bay leaves, cardamoms, cloves, black cardamom, stick, star anise one after another.
  3. Then add pudina, onions, green chillies and onion & garlic paste. Fry all the items well and add tomato pieces and cook till tender.
  4. Now add 2 glasses of water and avakaya (mango pieces with juice) and mix well. Now add biryani masala powder and salt to taste. When water starts boiling add soaked rice and mix well. Cook rice by covering lid in a lower flame. Cook for 30 – 40 mins. Open the lid and garnish with cashew nuts and chopped coriander.
  5. Serve and enjoy.
